recession; what recession? 15/12/2009 Birmingham and London law firm Martineau has confirmed Kavita Patel as the new head of its Corporate Finance Team. This news will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Martineau and its extraordinary performance in the Investment Funds sector in recent years.
The appointment is recognition of Kavita's efforts over the last three years, when occupying the role in all but title. During the worst recession in living memory, the Corporate Finance Team has out-performed many of its bigger, more famous rivals; all the more impressive when considering the size and location of the team. Contrary to recent trends, Kavita now heads a team that has grown in recent months to supplement the enormous experience and expertise within it.
Although it's very much business as usual, Kavita sees her appointment has a chance for change; "I expect we will concentrate on business a little nearer home there's plenty in the UK to keep us busy. The team has real fund investment experience, with partner Andrew Stilton alone clocking up more than 20 years outstanding service. I believe we are all corporate financiers at heart and being lawyers comes second - it's a critical difference. In our team we do our own tax work, rather than referring it to a specialist tax team we get to stay closer to the deal and bring innovation to our offering.
"We have a good business model and it appears to be gaining favour. We acted for the investors raising the funds to create the Closed Loop Recycling business and this business was so impressed with our work, we now act for them also.
Managing partner Bill Barker spoke of the importance of the appointment; "In difficult economic conditions it is tempting to make safe decisions to get through the tough times, but you miss opportunities to forge ahead.
