multiple client wins boost law firm

05/09/2007

The education department at Birmingham and London law firm Martineau Johnson has received its biggest boost ever, winning additional legal work at six of the UK's expanding higher and further education institutions.

The firm's rapid fire successes at Bournville College, Wiltshire College, City College Manchester, Barnet College, the University of Teesside and the University of Cumbria are likely to mean significant growth at the firm.

Paul Pharaoh, head of Martineau Johnson's education team, said: "For some years now, we have been concentrating investment in people and resources in education law, which we have defined as one of our core businesses.

"This series of wins was attributed to a mixture of success in a competitive tendering process and the reputation of our education team members with key people at the colleges concerned.

"The aim of our investment programme was always to create a market leadership in education law, which we have long recognised as a fast growing area.

"The result of strengthening our team over the years has been that we have been able to deepen our involvement in the education world, participating in conferences for example, as well as delivering an effective service.

"This approach has paid off in that we have been able to reap the rewards of being a substantial player in our market."

The additional work covers various aspects of the law, including advice on the relocation of a campus in Bournville, merger assistance at City College Manchester, a range of work for Barnet College, involving the firm's London office, and all legal services for Wiltshire College.

The firm's appointment at the University of Teesside in Middlesbrough followed a successful tendering process and places Martineau Johnson as joint legal advisers with local solicitors Dickinson Dees. Teesside was awarded university status in June 1992 and it has seen capital spending of over £100m and a rapid growth in student numbers since then.

Cumbria is the country's newest university, formed on 1 August by the merger of St Martin's College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire. It will play a major role in plans for the regeneration of the region, with Martineau Johnson acting as sole legal advisers.

"We will continue our drive for new business in the education sector and we expect to be recruiting more specialists to our team in the months ahead as the market and our share of it continues to grow," said Mr Pharaoh.
